What kind of Abrasive can be used in the Sand Blasting Process?

Abrasive blasting which is also commonly referred to as Sand Blasting Machine is a process in which a tool is used to smoothen out or polish a rugged surface. Rust and corrosion are general problems and normally Sand Blasting is a fast and efficient solution to rebuilding machinery, vessels, and metal parts back to their former condition and looking their best. Abrasive blasting can also be used to repair surfaces that may require repainting.

What is Sand Blasting?

Sand Blasting is a process where an abrasive element, identified as a medium, is chosen to blast into a facade to replace its smoothness or remove contaminants. The quantity of pressure will decide how long the process will take and the quality of results.

The term “Sand Blasting” was used basically, as when the method began in the past, sand was the only factor remaining used. These days other types of factors are now being used, depending on the surface, the type of metal, and the job being offered.

Different types of Sand Blasting Abrasive mediums that can be used:

Silica Sand or Silicon Dioxide Blasting :

Silicon Dioxide refers to common sand, which is also known as silica or quartz. Silica Sand Blasting was an ordinarily used process that is used for removing impurities from surfaces;  because the sand particles are almost the same size and the edges of the particles are sharp, hence making this type of sand useful in abrasive blasting.

Glass Bead Blasting :

For a matte and silky finish glass bead Sand Blasting can be used. This medium has very fine elements that smooth the surface of the object doing sandblasted. This type of abrasive blasting is normally used on blasting cabinets.

Steel Grit Blasting :

In this process, steel grit is generally used as an abrasive in the removal of rust and paint from steel metals. The use of steel leaves a smooth finish. Steel grit is can usually be preferred due to its fast-cutting nature.

Bristle Blasting :

In this type of abrasive blasting, it is no separate tool is used. Instead, steel wire bristles are applied on a surface. This rotating movement aids in the removal of dirt, hence leaving the outside smooth. This process is usually used to clean metal exteriors with some form of corrosion.

Soda Blasting :

Soda Sand Blasting relates to the use of baking soda or bicarbonate soda in the blasting process. Soda is used as an abrasive to eliminate rust from metals without causing trouble or damaging the metal below the rough surface. Soda is also great sand to use on fine materials that may be destroyed by tougher abrasives.

Advantages of Sand Blasting are as follows:

  1. Abrasive action on the surface - The abrasive materials which are being used in the process have an aggressive action on the surfaces.
  2. Fit for rough surfaces - The powerful action can remove contaminants from tough surfaces like concrete.
  3. Quick Removal of contaminants - Removals of the deposits of the contaminants very quickly from the different surfaces.
  4. Less machinery is involved - Abrasive blasting does not involve complex machinery.

Disadvantages of Sand Blasting are as follows:

  1. Not fit for Smooth Surfaces - For cleaning smooth surfaces, abrasive blasting is not fit because of the abrasives. Therefore, you can use soda blasting instead of sandblasting which also a similar procedure for surface preparation but in different ways.
  2. Abrasives - The abrasives which are being used in the sandblasting process are very rough. Therefore, if use that on a regular for particular surface preparation, it would wear away the surface of the particulars.
  3. Heat Generation - This process includes the projection of the particles with high velocity, therefore lots of heat is generated during the process that can harm health.
  4. Requires Precautions - A lot of precautionary is required with this process in order to prevent different types of hazards. Apart from it, an operator has to cover all his body parts at the time of its process.

Q. Is sand blasting hard?

Ans.

Sand blasting is easy to perform. While blasting it is necessary to wear operator safety wears so it will protect the operator from hazards. A portable sand blasting machine is used in an open area for large size of components. A portable sand blasting machine in India is a manual and semi-automatic type. Airless sand blasting machines are automatic and manual type as well.

Q. What is the weight of the sand blasting machine?

Ans.

Sand blasting machine in India is available in many sizes. The weight of the sand blasting machine varies according to the size of the storage capacity tank. As the size of the capacity tank varies, sand blasting machine prices also vary.

Q. What is a sand blasting application?

Ans.

Sand blasting is a process of removing rust, old paint, burrs, and other impurities from the component surfaces. Sand blasting has a wide range of applications in many areas like wood, glass, steel, plastic, shipbuilding industries, on buildings, medical equipment, etc. Sand blasting machine in India also rough the smooth surface according to the application area.

Q. Where do we use sand blasting?

Ans.

Sand blasting machine uses in various areas such as:-

  • Railway coaches
  • Handicrafts and wood
  • Steel pipes
  • Stones, Marbles, Granites
  • Transformers and Tanks
  • Military
  • Shipyards

Q. How much air pressure is needed for the sand blasting machine?

Ans.

For a sand blasting machine process minimum of 100 PSI air compressor is required. If work with a lower PSI cleaning rate of sand blasting machine in India is decreasing.

Q. Does sand blasting damage the component?

Ans.

Sand blasting machine in India gives surfaces a slightly textured profile. Sand blasting machine does not damage the component. Instead, sand blasting makes the component surface better so that thermal spray coating binds easily.

Q. What sand is best for the sand blasting process?

Ans.

In sand blasting most commonly used sand is white silica sand. Other blasting media such as aluminum oxide, glass beads, walnut shell, silicon carbide, etc are used in a sand blasting machine in India. Sand blasting machine price in India also vary as per the storage capacity of the tank.
